Roof Framing - Manufactured Truss Framing
Manufactured trusses have their own unique failure patterns. Three failure mechanisms
should be checked.
- Check the plumb of the trusses. Trusses may not be diagonally braced. If so, movement of
the roof may cause trusses to lean along the length of the roof like falling dominos.
- Check to see if trusses buckled. Manufactured trusses are not always a true truss. If
the center pops out and truss members are not in a plane, the truss has lost its ability
to support the roof. These trusses will need replacing.
- Check connections. If truss chords or members have split, or if connections are loose
enought that a credit card will fit between the gang nails and the wood, the truss has
lost its load resisting capacity.
