Roofs

Flat roofs are very susceptible to earthquake damage. Run a garden hose on your roof and see where the puddles form. If puddles are over 1/4-inch deep, they weren't built that way. Puddles also indicate possible damage to the roof framing beneath the puddle.

Sloped roofs are likely to bow or sag. This is harder to detect, but a trained eye can see the damage. Also, snaked tiles are a clue that roof damage may have occurred.

Flashing around connections to adjoining walls and around chimneys are common spots where roofs leak after an earthquake. Check these areas carefully.
