Interior Framing

Interior framing damage can be detected by looking at doors and cabinets.

Do you see the space around the door between the door and its frame? That space is called the "reveal". Ordinarily the reveal is of near uniform width around the door edges. If the reveal is 1/4-inch wide at the top of the door and the door sticks at the bottom, guess what? No, it wasn't the door that changed its shape during the earthquake. The frame around the door moved. The stress cracks around the corners of the door also result from the sidesway of the door opening. The door framing beneath the finish needs inspecting and, perhaps, repair.

Stress cracks are commonly found around doors on the interior. If the cracks are longer than 12 inches or wider than 1/8-inch, we suggest you remove the dry wall or plaster finish and inspect the framing beneath.

Ceiling cracks may be accompanied by a bow in the ceiling beneath a broken or unsecured joist. If the ceiling is bowed near ceiling cracks, you may have damage to the ceiling joists above.

Do you see a gap between the top of your cabinets and the ceiling? Do the doors line up evenly, or do they stagger? Your cabinets may be reflecting motion that occurred in the entire house.
